Bone Anchored Hearing Devices

Bone anchored hearing devices are a specialized form of hearing technology designed for people who cannot benefit fully from traditional hearing aids. Instead of sending sound through the ear canal, these systems deliver sound through bone conduction, allowing vibrations to travel directly through the skull to the inner ear. This approach uses your natural inner-ear function to hear more clearly when the outer or middle ear is not working optimally, or when hearing is present in only one ear.

A bone anchored hearing system includes two parts. The internal portion is either a small titanium abutment or a magnet that is surgically placed into the skull by an otolaryngologist (ENT). The external sound processor then attaches to this internal component. The processor picks up sound from your environment — similar to a hearing aid — and converts it into gentle vibrations that travel through bone to stimulate the cochlea. Once the cochlea receives the signal, your auditory system takes over, sending sound along the hearing pathway to the brain in a natural and efficient way.

Bone anchored hearing devices are most commonly recommended for individuals with conductive hearing loss, mixed hearing loss, or unilateral hearing loss (single-sided deafness). They are especially helpful when the ear canal cannot comfortably hold a hearing aid, when chronic infections or anatomy prevent effective amplification, or when sound needs to be routed to a better-hearing ear. Many patients describe the result as clearer sound, improved awareness, and more comfortable listening in daily life.

At AudioSense, we work with both Cochlear Baha systems and Oticon Medical Ponto systems, offering the latest generations as well as support for previous models. If surgery isn’t the right step for you — or if you want to experience bone conduction before committing — we can program bone anchored processors on a softband or arc. This allows children, teens, and adults to trial bone conduction hearing or use it long-term without surgery, while still receiving the same precision programming and clinical follow-up.

Through our implant partnerships, we also carry a full range of new parts, accessories, and upgrades for bone anchored devices. Our goal is to make this technology accessible, practical, and supported for the long term. We don’t just help you get the device — we ensure it’s programmed correctly, comfortable to use, and optimized over time as your listening needs evolve.
