At AudioSense, all of our testing, consultations, counseling and treatment is done by an audiologist. When we do a hearing test, we assess all the different parts and hearing functions of the ear. We teach you how to read the audiogram and show you what your hearing is like using modern digital equipment.

The recommended treatment for hearing loss will sometimes be hearing aids, however, at times, we might recommend other courses of interventions, such as custom earplugs, auditory rehabilitation, relaxation therapies, etc… Either way, we are a hearing clinic that customizes your treatment and recommended interventions to your hearing loss needs, your budget and your specific challenges and complaints.

Tinnitus, Hyperacusis and Misophonia Assessment and Management

Tinnitus, otherwise described as ringing in the ears, is extremely common. While some people will experience temporary symptoms of tinnitus after a loud event, for others, tinnitus can be permanent. Tinnitus can also affect different people in different ways. For some, tinnitus is a phantom phenomenon that comes and goes and doesn’t really affect them much – they find it easy to ignore. For others, however, tinnitus can be extremely bothersome and extremely debilitating. No matter what your symptoms and experience with Tinnitus, we can help!

At AudioSense, we offer a full tinnitus assessment which is comprised of having you fill out a questionnaire and we perform a few tests on you. Our audiologist, Salima Jiwani, is certified with the Widex Zen Therapy Tinnitus Certification. We then discuss results in depth and management strategies that you can engage in both at home and with us in our hearing health clinic, to help.

We also work with patients who suffer from symptoms of Hyperacusis and Misophonia. While these conditions are more challenging to assess and treat, we work with you to customize an intervention plan to help you. What is more, is that, at AudioSense, we offer our own relaxation therapies through a form of yoga called Kriya. Our Kriya classes are offered weekly as both private and group classes, and they focus on Pranayama practices of deep breathing, full body muscle relaxation, meditation and visual imagery; all of which have been shown to be effective methods of relaxation to help with symptoms of tinnitus, misophonia and hyperacusis.

Auditory Processing Disorders Assessment

Central auditory processing disorder is an umbrella term that refers to the way the brain processes auditory input. While our ears may be able to detect speech normally and appropriately, with auditory processing disorders, there is a disruption in the way sounds get processed along the pathways from our ears to our brain, which interferes with understanding.

Individuals who suffer from auditory processing disorders will often appear to have a hearing loss even though their hearing is normal. They will also generally complain about difficulty hearing in noise or in reverberant environment and may exhibit difficulty with listening, attention and memory.

At AudioSense, we offer both an abbreviated and complete assessment battery of auditory processing tests. The complete assessment may require two separate appointments and includes having you fill out a questionnaire and perform a multitude of tests in our hearing clinic. We can then customize an intervention plan for you, based on the identified challenges. What is more, we will make sure to help advocate for you, either in your place of work or at school, to make sure that you are receiving appropriate support. We know that any type of auditory processing difficulties, no matter how minor or subtle, can affect the way you function in everyday life.

Ear Wax (Cerumen) Management

Keeping your ears clean and free of debris is important for you to hear well and keep good ear hygiene. Luckily, our ears are self-cleaning. Ear wax, also known as cerumen, serves as a sterile self-cleaning agent with protective, lubricating, and antibacterial properties. Dead skin cells and debris will take to the earwax and will slowly migrate out of the ear canal through the opening of the ear, where it will dry, flake or fall out. In normal amounts, ear wax is normal. Under ideal circumstances, earwax should never need to be cleaned out. However, some individuals will naturally produce more wax than others and in some cases, earwax can accumulate in the ear canal. When this happens, earwax can cause a blockage in the ear and needs to be removed.

At AudioSense, we can help remove earwax. Most cases of accumulated or impacted ear wax will respond well to home softening treatments. We will often recommend that you place a few drops of mineral oil in your ears, twice a day for a week. Our audiologists can then remove the ear wax for you easily and painlessly – we will often use drops of water that we place in the ear and we remove the wax from your ear canals manually with a small curette. This allows us to perform this procedure in the least invasive way possible in our hearing clinic.
