Binaural hearing is the ability to hear with both ears simultaneously. The brain uses small differences in the timing and loudness of sound arriving at each ear to determine where a sound is coming from, a process called localization. Binaural hearing also improves speech understanding in noisy environments by allowing the brain to focus on a primary sound source while suppressing background noise.
When a person has hearing loss in both ears, wearing two hearing aids (one per ear) restores some degree of binaural processing. Hearing with only one aid when two are recommended reduces localization ability and increases listening effort, particularly in complex listening environments such as restaurants or group settings.
Most audiologists recommend binaural fitting when there is measurable hearing loss in both ears and both ears can benefit from amplification. Single-sided hearing loss requires different device options such as CROS systems or bone-anchored devices.
