An omnidirectional microphone in the context of hearing aids is a microphone configuration that picks up sound from all directions with approximately equal sensitivity. It does not favor sounds from in front of the wearer over sounds from behind or the sides. All directions of sound input are amplified, giving the wearer a full awareness of the acoustic environment around them.
Omnidirectional mode is most useful in quiet or low-noise environments where the wearer wants to hear ambient sound from all directions, such as in a quiet home, a small group conversation, or outdoor environments where awareness of surrounding sounds is important. It is also preferred by some wearers in situations where the speaker is not positioned directly in front of them.
Modern hearing aids typically switch automatically between omnidirectional and directional microphone modes depending on the listening environment, using the hearing aid's sound classification system to detect whether background noise is present. When noise is detected, the hearing aid may shift to a directional configuration to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for a frontal speaker. When the acoustic environment is quiet, it returns to omnidirectional pickup. Some wearers also manually select their preferred microphone mode using the hearing aid's program button or a paired smartphone app.
