The speech recognition threshold is the softest level in decibels at which a person can correctly repeat standardized two-syllable words (spondees) 50 percent of the time under controlled test conditions. It is one of the core measures in speech audiometry. Spondees are familiar two-syllable words with equal stress on each syllable.
The SRT is used to confirm and cross-check the pure tone average (PTA), which is the average hearing threshold at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 Hz from the audiogram. In a normal-hearing ear, the SRT should align closely with the PTA (typically within 10 dB). A significant discrepancy between the two can indicate a functional (non-organic) hearing loss or may raise suspicion for a retrocochlear disorder. The SRT also determines the level at which word recognition (clarity) testing is subsequently performed.
Audiologists rely on the SRT alongside other measures to build a complete picture of hearing ability and its impact on communication.
