A temporary threshold shift is a short-term reduction in hearing sensitivity following exposure to loud noise. After exposure to high sound levels, the cochlea's outer hair cells become fatigued and respond less efficiently, causing hearing to temporarily worsen. The person may notice that sounds seem muffled or that tinnitus develops after leaving a loud environment. With adequate rest away from noise, hearing typically recovers to its pre-exposure level within hours to a few days.
Repeated temporary threshold shifts without sufficient recovery time can lead to cumulative, permanent damage over years of exposure. TTS is considered an early warning sign that noise exposure is occurring at levels that may eventually cause permanent hearing loss if the pattern continues.
Regular hearing monitoring is recommended for individuals with regular occupational or recreational noise exposure.
