The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) is an Ontario Ministry of Health program that helps residents with long-term physical disabilities pay for customized equipment such as hearing aids. For hearing-related devices, ADP provides a fixed subsidy per hearing aid toward the purchase cost for eligible Ontario residents who hold a valid OHIP card, have a documented hearing loss, and require hearing devices for daily living activities at home, school, work, or recreation.
Hearing aids must be prescribed by a registered audiologist and must appear on the ADP-approved product list. The ADP subsidy is available for new devices and in some circumstances for replacement devices. Typically, a new ADP claim is available when a device is no longer repairable or when a change in hearing warrants new amplification, generally after a minimum period from the previous claim. Batteries, repairs, and some hearing-related accessories may also be eligible under ADP in certain circumstances.
ADP does not cover the full cost of most hearing aids, and a co-payment from the patient is typically required for the difference between the ADP subsidy and the device price. Audiologists registered with ADP can submit claims on behalf of eligible clients. Additional top-up funding may be available through other programs such as ODSP, ACSD, Veterans Affairs Canada, WSIB, or private insurance, depending on the individual's circumstances.
