An in-the-canal hearing aid is a custom-molded device that sits in the lower portion of the outer ear and extends into the entrance of the ear canal. It is smaller and less visible than an in-the-ear (ITE) style but larger than a completely-in-canal (CIC) or invisible-in-canal (IIC) device.
ITC hearing aids are appropriate for mild to moderate hearing loss. They can include features such as directional microphones, volume controls, and wireless connectivity, though their smaller size limits how many features can be included compared to larger styles. Because they sit partially in the ear canal, ITC devices take some advantage of the natural shape of the outer ear to collect sound, which can improve sound localization compared to behind-the-ear styles.
They are custom-made from an ear canal impression and available in skin tone options. Regular cleaning is necessary to prevent cerumen from blocking the microphone or receiver ports.
