An in-the-ear hearing aid is a custom-made device that fills the bowl of the outer ear (the concha). It is larger than canal styles and suitable for a wider range of hearing loss, including moderate to severe configurations. Because ITE devices have more physical space than smaller canal models, they accommodate larger batteries, more powerful receivers, and additional features such as directional microphones and volume controls.
The larger size also makes them easier to handle, particularly for people with limited finger dexterity. ITE hearing aids are custom-made from an impression of the wearer's ear and are available in different skin tone colors to reduce visibility. One limitation is that they can be more susceptible to moisture and cerumen accumulation at the microphone and receiver ports than behind-the-ear styles. Regular cleaning and maintenance extend the device's working life.
In Ontario, ITE hearing aids are eligible for Assistive Devices Program (ADP) funding when prescribed by a registered audiologist and the person meets eligibility criteria.
