Lenire is a medical device for tinnitus treatment developed by Neuromod Devices, an Irish medical technology company. It uses a technique called bimodal neuromodulation, which stimulates two sensory systems simultaneously with the goal of reducing tinnitus severity by promoting changes in how the brain processes the tinnitus signal. The device received FDA approval in the United States and has been evaluated in large-scale clinical trials.
The Lenire system has three components: wireless over-ear headphones that deliver customized audio stimulation, a small intraoral device called a Tonguetip that delivers mild electrical pulses to the surface of the tongue (stimulating the trigeminal nerve), and a handheld controller that allows the user to adjust settings. The tongue stimulation is described by most users as a gentle tingling or champagne bubble sensation. Treatment sessions are typically 30 minutes twice daily over a period recommended by the clinician, usually around 12 weeks.
The device is fitted and programmed by trained audiologists or other hearing healthcare professionals who assess tinnitus candidacy and customize the audio component to the individual's tinnitus profile and hearing thresholds. It is intended for adults with subjective tinnitus and is not a cure, but clinical data show that a significant proportion of users experience a meaningful reduction in tinnitus-related distress and perceived loudness.
