Otoscopy is a clinical examination of the ear canal and eardrum using an otoscope, a handheld instrument with a light source and magnifying lens. It is a routine part of any audiological or medical ear assessment. Otoscopy allows the clinician to inspect the ear canal for cerumen buildup, foreign objects, signs of infection, or abnormalities in the canal skin.
It also provides a view of the eardrum, where the clinician assesses color, translucency, position, and any visible perforations, scarring, or fluid behind the membrane. Normal eardrums are translucent and pearl-gray. A red, bulging, or opaque eardrum can indicate infection or fluid in the middle ear. A retracted eardrum may suggest negative middle ear pressure from Eustachian tube dysfunction.
Otoscopy findings guide decisions about further testing, earwax removal, medical referral, or readiness for hearing aid fitting.
