Assistive listening devices are tools that improve a person's ability to hear in specific listening situations. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify all sounds in the environment, ALDs are designed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in targeted settings such as classrooms, theatres, places of worship, and workplaces.
Common types include FM systems, loop (telecoil) systems, infrared systems, and Bluetooth-based accessories. FM systems transmit a speaker's voice directly to a receiver worn by the listener, reducing the effect of distance and background noise. Telecoil-compatible venues broadcast audio wirelessly to the telecoil built into many hearing aids and cochlear implant processors. Telecoil access in public buildings is increasingly required under Canadian accessibility legislation.
ALDs can be used independently or alongside hearing aids and cochlear implants. In Ontario, some ALDs for children in educational settings may be funded through the school board or provincial programs.
