Ontario Works is Ontario's social assistance program providing temporary financial assistance to individuals and families in need while supporting them in becoming financially self-sufficient. Ontario Works is intended as short-term assistance during periods of financial difficulty, as distinct from ODSP, which provides longer-term support for people with disabilities.
Ontario Works does not include a dedicated hearing aid benefit equivalent to ODSP's Hearing Aid Benefit. However, Ontario Works caseworkers have access to discretionary benefits that can, in limited circumstances, assist with costs not covered elsewhere, including some hearing-related expenses for adult dependants aged 18 and over who are not eligible for ODSP. The availability and amount of discretionary benefits varies by case and is not guaranteed.
For most Ontario Works recipients who need hearing aids, the primary funding route remains the Assistive Devices Program (ADP), which is available to all eligible Ontario residents with a valid OHIP card and a documented hearing loss requiring amplification. Audiologists assisting clients with funding navigation should clarify which programs apply based on the client's situation and direct them to appropriate social services staff for means-tested program applications.
